Hello! Can anyone give me any insight as to what’s going on with my bird of paradise? So I bought this plant in March 2024 from FB marketplace and it was beautiful, green, and full with many leaves. It’s June 2024 and it has since lost 8 of its leaves (all the lower older leaves that turned dry, hard, brown) and no longer points upward and appears droopy and sparse. The stems also appear to have decreased in volume. I have her near a large south facing window (so bright, indirect) and water once the soil feels more dry 2in down. So about once a week. I mist and clean the leaves.. Haven’t changed the soil or repotted yet since I got her. I also use fertilizer once per month starting in April.

In all honesty it sounds like you’re doing everything you should be. I think there could be 2 potential problems. It may just be plant shock (which you can fix just by continuing proper care), or there is a chance it may be some type of pest. I would look over every leaf and stem closely to verify it’s not pests

Thank you for your timely response! I took a good look and I don’t see any evidence of pests.. you’re right, it must be shock. Do you think moving it to new soil would be beneficial since it’s now been 3 months since I moved it here?

Honestly I would maybe give it a little more time maybe like another month or two and then repot

The smaller leaves will tend to die off as the plant grows. Also, as BOPs get bigger, they tend to spread out due to the weight of their leaves. Have you checked to see if it’s root bound? That’s my guess. Good luck!

I haven’t! Since it’s been about 3 months, I wanted to give it some time to acclimate first.. I figure maybe I should change out the soil pretty soon to get a look at those roots.
