I'm having trouble with this guy. I repotted him in good well draining soil (I had to repot twice because the first pot did not have drainage) but leaves keep curling and I just keep cutting them off. One of the root ball things fell off during the repot and I figured that was why the leaves are dying. But I could use some advice here. Before and after pic. His name is Cosmo he is a rattlesnake plant. Someone please help! He's losing so many leaves!!

Oh and the soil remains pretty moist. So I really don't know what to do!!

Add more perlite or orchid bark. This will provide more aeration to the roots. I only water my rattlesnake plant when it dries out. Are the rocks from before or after the repot?

Hey thanks for responding, I'm hesitant to repot for a third time, do you think it's resilient enough to do that? It has a decent bit of perlite mixed in. I added the rocks when I repotted the second time and they're only on the top.

I would not repot again — let it adjust!

These guys can definitely be tricky. They prefer high humidity which can be difficult to get indoors It looks like you might have too large of a pot. This means that the soil is staying wet for too long. Since it was repotted recently, I would just leave it for now, but be careful not to over-water

Thanks, it was root bound in its other pot and this one is about 1-2 inches wider in diameter. I will not overwater! And I will break out my humidifier.

The repotting is stressful for a calathea — they don’t love their roots being messed with. Mine does really well with low key neglect. I fertilizer with every other water and only water when it’s dry. Mine just pushed out ten — literally ten lol — new leaves at once

Definitely agree with letting it adjust first. Some plants are very prone to shock from being moved or repotted. If after a week or so the plant still seems to be doing poorly, or worse, the soil is STILL wet, it might be the soil. Would you happen to know what brand soil you used? Some brands aren’t well draining or hold too much moisture, even with extra perlite added for drainage. Miracle Grow, for example, is infamous for being a plant killer, especially if you live in a more humid environment in the summer, and Ive had their succulent soil with a whole bag of perlite added to it remain completely moist for a whole two weeks. This coupled with it possibly being too big of a pot for the root system now could be what’s causing the issue with the leaves. If you do plan on repotting it again for any reason, I definitely suggest reducing it completely to its roots and soaking the roots in a mix of 1/3 hydrogen peroxide and 2/3 water for 30 minutes. It’ll help treat the roots, especially if the roots have rotted. If there’s any root rot by the time you repot, cut the rotted roots off before soaking the roots in the mixture. Then rinse the roots off with water, gently dry them, and repot them in a well draining soil and give it time to adjust. Hope this helps!

I recommend removing the rocks. Rocks slow evaporation of water from the soil. This leaves water around the roots too long leading to root rot.

Guys!! So I gave him a little water and removed the rocks. I can't figure out why some of the leaves keep curling up like this. Anyone seen this before?
