how likely is my monstera to revive from a severe case of fungus gnats :/ any advice will help, iāve already rinsed the roots out and repotted, unfortunately had a small casualty with an older leaf but iām more worried about if it will recover. tyia
In my experience fungus gnats have never damaged a plant. Could you send pics?
2 gillningar i should have taken a picture of the issue but i cut opened the pot outside and used my hose on the roots, but the leaves on the itself were drooping and have these specks on them. iāve found gnats in the water of some of my propagations and around my house so i was assuming that was the issue, as my mother told me the eggs were the yellow specks throughout the soil. its dark outside where i am now and i currently donāt have a grow light. am i being dramatic iām fairly new to houseplants iām just in love with this plant and dont want it to dieš„ŗ
I'm actually not sure what the eggs look like, I don't know that I've ever taken a plant with fungus gnats out of the pot. Like I said, I don't think fungus gnats will harm a plant, unless they get very very very bad. They are just super annoying. Am I correct in understanding that what you first noticed was drooping leaves and specks on the leaves? And if so, did the specks fly around?

Is that the specks you were talking about? I hate trying to identify things from pictures tbh, but pests are more likely to be on the underside of the leaf. Unless it's fungus gnats of course, they seem to just land anywhere. Spider mites are gonna be much smaller than that. Thrips are narrow. And mealybugs are white and kinda fluffy looking. I'm gonna say if anything it's a fungus gnat.

Yeah looks like it may have gotten scratched, but I can't see it just super well, so you might want to watch and make sure it doesn't spread. And if it was your cats, beware, because they are toxic to cats, although not usually fatal. My cat has def chomped into mine a time or two and she's still fine.
0 gillningarHonestly, the plant looks fine and healthy to me. If you want advice for getting rid of fungus gnats, repotting with fresh soil can help. But if you just to it out of the pit you probably don't want to stress it out more by taking it out again. I've heard a lot about mosquito bits for fungus gnats. When they were driving me crazy I used hydrogen peroxide. One part hydrogen peroxide to three parts water(some people dilute it more) and water like usual. I'm not sure if i did it more than once or not, you could just wait and see if that takes care of them and if not go again. I'm not sure if it completely took care if them for me, but they were no longer annoying me. This last spring though, I ended up giving all my plants bonide systemic because of thrips, and I never notice fungus gnats anymore. I don't look for them either, but I would notice if there were lots. Probably the simplest thing to try would just be letting the soil dry out more. But of course only what your plant can handle. That's probably another reason I don't see fungus gnats, I've let my plants dry out way too much sometimes in the last whileš

I have had fungus gnats in my white bird of paradise for quite a while and have never seen damage to the plant itself or noticed a change. Fungus gnats just like the damp soil. Their eggs are also not usually visible to the human eye so Iām guessing the yellow specks are not that. Is it possible it had root rot?

The condition that causes root rot is the same condition that lets fungus gnats survive which is continuously damp or wet soil. Root rot shows up as yellowing leaves and rotting roots. Cleaning the rot and carefully watering can stop the plant damage. It takes time to recover and additional leaves can be lost during the recover due to the stress of chopping roots and soil replacement. Pesticides like Mosquito Bits can kill the fungus gnats over time. Remove the plant damage. Verify the soil is mostly dry before watering (the leaves will slightly droop). Use the Mosquito Bits tea (granules soaked in water) with each watering cycle. Regularly fertilize during the growing season. Give it plenty of bright indirect or filtered sunlight. šŖ“š

I had a horrible fungus gnat issue and I solved it by watering all my plants with mosquito bits. I put the right amount for my watering can in sachets and throw a sachet in hot water overnight and water in the morning. It takes a few cycles of watering but they die!
0 gillningar Also let the plants dry out well before you rewater! The gnats lay their eggs in the soil and will grow in wet/overwatered soil. You need good drainage and soil that has other things mixed in to make it more airy!
