Mold and fungal spores are naturally in soil. They’re actually a good sign. If you re noticing buildup on the surface it’s most likely from using tap water. You can remove the top layer of soil and spray the soil surface weekly with neem oil to prevent it. More aeration added to your soil mixture would also help (perlite, bark, pumice)

Should I be using distilled water instead?

It depends on your overall water quality but filtered, distilled, reverse osmosis, or rain water is best I edited my comment to add aeration as well I think that would help

Usually caused by low air circulation. You can spritz it with peroxide or sprinkle on ceylon cinnamon and mix in. Both have antifungal properties

I have used baking cinnamon successfully to inhibit mold. I had this same problem with my tradescantia because it was in an irrigation pot and all the water wasn’t evaporating. I also use distilled only for my plants. And I’ve seen more success with that
