I just got this beautiful moth orchid from my dad for my birthday! However, upon inspecting the roots, I definitely need to do some emergency care. I have attempted to grow an orchid before, needless to say, it died because of these same conditions. What/ how do I go about cutting the rotting roots, what soil mixture should I use, and do you have any recommendations on orchid pots with a little more air circulation? I just brought it into the light for pictures, it’s going to stay away from direct bright light!

    I would definitely take it out of that yucky sphagnum moss mix and use a pair of alcohol sterilized clippers to do away with any roots that are rotting, or hollow and straw-like. Then repot it in a very thick and chunky potting mix, I use bark s about an inch in size and water them only once in two weeks.

    I have not needed an orchid pot with extra holes. I put my orchid pot into another with no drainage holes and water them from the bottom by submerging them for around 5 minutes every two weeks. This way, you can avoid accidental water ingress into the stem and avoid rot issues.

    I've also heard of great result when growing them in nothing but water. Something you could research if you wanted to experiment. 😬
