Hi all! I noticed this white fuzzy stuff in the soil of my monkeys mask plant. I watered a couple days ago. Is it mold? Do I have to repot? Sorry, first time plant owner here!

It is mold but harmless. it’s a sign of overwatering and/or poor drainage. Let the top layer dry out before watering again. And keep an eye out for gnats, those sometimes follow I don’t own one of these so double check your planta care recs to see what it tolerates, but when this happens to my plant I’ll move it into the sun (or closer to the fireplace in winter) where it’s warmer to help it dry.

I would also aerate the soil regularly to improve drainage. I have been shown that helps🙂

If you start noticing gnats u have quite a few options: id look into mosquito bits (always dissolve in water they can create more mold if you just lay them on top), bonide plant and insect killer (comes in powder form, downside is you have to unpot and repot to thoroughly mix with soil, do not recommend if you have pets that like your plants), and perfect plantista (this is a pet friendly spray made up of high doses of peppermint, thyme, and cinnamon bark essential oils. You must spray top and bottom of pots. Downside is you have to repeat the process every few days until you stop seeing them). It disrupts the breeding cycle. I like to pair any of these options with sticky traps for adults.

A DIY for the mold and any gnat larvae that might be present is to spritz hydrogen peroxide diluted with water (1:10) on the soil (foliage too if needed). I just mig a little travel spray bottle and keep it near the plant to remind me to spritz everyday until the mold/gnats bigger off. And of course yellow sticky traps for the gnats the level up from larvae to floating jerkfaces.
