Oooof that is rough! My condolences! How is the stalk doing? If you dig a couple inches into the soil does it get mushy? Does the soil reek of ammonium?

The stalk feels kinda mushy at the base where the soil starts but it doesn’t smell very strong

Yes, there is absolutely hope! The japanese aralia  is a tough plant, but it does not like its roots to sit in water. The drooping and yellowing are definitely signs of stressed from lack of oxygen in the roots. Because this happened so fast, you can likely fix it by letting the soil dry out. If there is a drainage problem, you can add amendments to the soil to aid in aerating the roots. Just prune the damaged, soft roots, (if there are any).

How do I help dry it out? I’ve taken it out of the white pot and the nursery pot has holes - I have it near the door but if I put it in the sun it freaks out! How do I go about pruning? Should I cut off the damaged leaves?

Some of my decorative pots are too tight because they fit perfect but that allows for no extra airflow so they are bad for a few my plants. You could pull the plant out of the nursery pot, don't mess with the root, but take out any dirt that's left in the pot and replace it with dry soil. I also use either a drill or a soldering iron and make extra holes around the sides of my nursery pots so there's more airflow...

Oooh extra holes is a great idea! I’ll check the soil tonight once I’m home. When I take off the dying leaves should I cut close to the base?? I’m a new plant mama and I’m a bit overwhelmed 🤣

I have major OCD so I live by the phrase "life is too short for ulgy plants" so I ALWAYS trim off dead, dieing, or yellowing leaves. 🤪

I cut off the leaf all the way to the base because it won't come back 🪴
