Hi! My aloe vera is struggling… Very dry, appears to be dying from the bottom up. I’m going to move it to a location with better light based on Planta’s recommendation. Is there anything else I should be doing? Maybe it should be repotted? The soil looks kind of gross, but unsure if the condition is harmful. I took all of the dead leaves off, they were brown, thin and dry like paper.

    I think you might have root rot. Underwatering usually causes leaves to dry and die from the tip down, and your pot has potting mix with flowerpot parasol growing in it, which can indicate overwatering. Since you have such a long bare stem, you could cut and propagate to restart it. If you prefer to treat it, repot. Check for root rot, remove any diseased roots, and treat the rest for rot. Downsize the pot (succulents like a close fit and having too much extra soil means unused water will stay in the sides and stagnate), and repot with a high-drainage cactus mix. Avoid getting water between the leaves or on the stem where it can get trapped. If you keep the stem, i suggest also starting one or two cuttings just in case the main plant dies
