hi friends, looking to see if anyone has any suggestions for how to help my poor medusa head. i’ve had this plant for a couple years now, and she had always been pretty low maintenance. one day, i noticed a bunch of her tentacles starting to turn yellow and fall off, which i recognized as a symptom of root rot. i did have her in a pot with a drainage hole, but upon taking her out, i realized the drainage hole had gotten severely impacted at some point. she was probably sitting in damp soil for much longer than she should’ve been, and since she was always one of the lower priority plants, i let her go way too long without noticing. i repotted her about 9 weeks ago, and her soil has remained decently damp so i haven’t given her regular watering. i have misted her though. i also want to note that i am using a grow light indoors for her. before all this happened, i kept her outside in the winter but took her in for the summer, as i live in the desert and haven’t been successful leaving cascading succulents like this outside during the intense heat. it was when i moved her in for the summer that i noticed her poor health. as you can see in the photos, she must’ve lost 75% of her tentacles, and they’re continuing to turn yellow and fall off *much* quicker than any regrowth is happening. she’s also pretty loose in the soil, as in she hasn’t really rooted down and if i wanted to i could probably lift her straight out of the dirt without doing any digging. there is a little bit newer growth on top, from many months ago, that is still green and healthy looking. i’m hoping there’s a way to save this top growth even though her base is starting to look like a lost cause. any advice, personal experience, or general anecdotes would be greatly appreciated. eternal thanks for taking the time to read this post 🌱💚

I don’t have this plant myself but it sounds like you did the right things. If the new soil is also damp then maybe the roots need more time to air dry before going into the mixture, and maybe using a temporary even more airy mixture while the roots dry could help too. I’d like to think the new growth is a good sign that your plant is working on recovering. I had a succulent lose a large percentage of leaves but once I corrected my issue the plant has put out new growth and has stabilised, so hopefully the same is the case with your plant.

thanks so much for your reply! i noticed the new growth a while before these problems began, definitely before the new year. that growth hasn’t lost many leaves, but it also hasn’t grown anymore since these problems started. it’s remained really stagnant over these past 2 months. hopefully this plant will stabilize and she can get back to growing out her crown. i do think it would be beneficial to let the roots dry out in the air, especially since it’ll be so easy to get them out of the pot. thanks again and have a great day ✨

The slowing new growth could be a good sign, I was doing some reading on if succulents pause leaf growth when stressed and it looks like they do. It’s a mechanism to divert resources to areas like roots, which should help replace any lost to root rot. Also loosing older mature leaves can also be part of that strategy to redirect energy. I just thought that was so interesting and hopefully it means your Medusa is doing the right things (even though it can look quite scary to watch) to recover and get back to her former glory. I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed for you, best of luck and I hope you have a great day too 😄🪴✨

I have a Medusas head that has done well over the years. Definitely need good drainage , let it completely dry between waterings. Planta”s schedule has worked fine for my plant. I wouldn’t mist it though. Mine also doesn’t get full sun but prefers dappled light. Hope yours recovers.

since the soil has remained damp, i’ve skipped watering according to this app’s schedule. i have been misting according to the app’s schedule cause i’m scared to underwater her on top of everything she’s already been through. but i will hold off on anymore misting or watering until the soil actually dries up completely. thanks so much for your response! after hearing from this community i’m more hopeful my medusa head can be saved eventually. have a great day!
