Can someone guide me to bring this Calathea Pinstripe back to life?… | Pests, diseases and problems | Plantaコミュニティ

Trying: Plant Gal

Can someone guide me to bring this Calathea Pinstripe back to life? When I first got it she had about 30 stems and now we are down to 5. I use boiled water (cooked to room temp) to water. I kept it in indirect sunlight in the warmer room of the house. I repotted it in the summer but I think I need to take it out. Rinse the roots and separate some out that look rotted and repot? Any suggestions???

I don’t have one but this is what I found online about them! I’d also get a humidifier! I know they like higher humidity

I’d honestly cut the stems back in the beginning of growing season (maybe late march) and regrow! That way the plant can use its energy on new growth instead of the old growth! I’ve done that with my bonsai and it grew back so quickly!

Pinstripe can be very touchy. I had one that died, but in my defense it was quite sickly when I got it. This definitely sensitive to minerals and other substances in tap water and probably well water as well. I have a Stella and I water with distilled water and it's been doing better than with tap water. The cutting back at the beginning of growing season may be a very good idea. I do this with my prayer plant which is a cousin to the calatheas and it always comes back beautifully. I've had the prayer plant for probably 15 years.

That’s what I’m going to do then! Should I repot it and separate the roots a bit first?

I’m having the exact same problem. It had mineral free water, indirect light, and was in the bathroom so it got plenty of humidity. But I think I realized that the humidity just wasn’t consistent enough. The shower would turn on, then off, then the window would open and a cool draft would come in, etc. So I moved it to a spot where it would get a consistent level of humidity (it’s not much so I spray the leaves, but the consistency is crucial). I trimmed back the curling/dead foliage. It’s just one sad leaf now, but I believe that it will recover with time. So if you placed your in a spot with cool drafts/inconsistency, that might be the issue. I hope this helps!

It is the most finicky plant I have ever had!

I say a silent prayer for calathea owners. I realized many years ago we are not compatible!😁 My north facing windows, crispy tap water and temperature fluctuations from letting my two dogs outside can’t support a calathea.

I did not even consider that! The dogs are in and out so much with a sliding door!

I don't think I would repot it right now unless the soil is really soggy. It's a low light time and disturbing The Roots would probably shock it. It would be better to wait a couple months. I think if the roots are rotted at this point it's too late. If you do report it choose your pot size based on how many roots are left. They don't like too much soil around their roots.
