I've been noticing white millipedes (garden symphlans per google?) in a few of my plants. The sites I've looked at say it's usually due to a moisture problem, but it seems like if I water any less than I am my plants wilt and my spider plant loses color. I'm wondering if I need to repot them in soil with more drainage? So far the plants I've noticed them in are all from the same shop, but I've repotted one of them and it still has the same problem. I also read these bugs aren't necessarily harmful, but I'm not a big fan of seeing them in my houseplants 😬

This happened to me last summer. I got a plant from Home Depot and out of nowhere all my plants started getting the lil gnats. I actually got rid of the main plant that came with them because it just had so many. However, all my other plants I kept. I just repotted them all with a moisture control soil mixed with peat moss (for some, depending on the plant) and then I also got these sticky things to stick in the soil to catch whatever was still lingering. My plants are amazing now.

Technically you are right they are not harmful. I like to dunk mine in a huge water bucket and the bugs come out of the soil eventually

diatomaceous earth! it’s my go to pesticide as it’s not harmful to humans or pets (as long as you get the food-grade version, i use the brand ‘safer’) and it’s all natural, it’s made from silica in fossilized algae. i used it to beat the fungus gnats that were all around my spider plant and golden pothos, they were gone with no trace within a week. i mixed a few tablespoons into the soil to help it dry/drain well and prevent infestation in the pot, and then COVERED the top of the soil with a layer of diatomaceous earth. it gets all sorts of bugs bc it dries them out and acts as tiny knives and cuts them all up. just beware to not put too much into your soil and keep an eye on the hydration of your plants, it can easily suck too much moisture from the soil and dry them out. i highly recommend using it because it’s very hard to mess up, it’s natural and not harmful to us, and if you mix it into the soil, it protects your plants from problems that come with too much moisture: fungus gnats, garden symphylans, root rot, etc.

I’ve brought home millipedes from Home Depot and through delivery from an online store. They were dropping out of the drain holes. I sprayed the bottom of the pot with ant and roach spray to prevent millipedes from moving around my house. I flooded the large 10” pot with a hose to encourage them to move out the bottom of the pot. Then, I sprayed the pot bottom with Raid. Diatomaceous earth on top of the soil wouldn’t work since they never came to the top.

I try not to use it unless I’m really desperate. I used it on infected plants inside that can’t go outside usually due to cold weather. Plants outside usually get maintenance from the lizards, frogs and other friendly options. So, I don’t use Raid on those plants. I spayed under the pot not the plant itself.
