My sister’s ZZ plant just flopped over today. It was doing fine and had a ton of new growth. Her roots look fine and she only waters when the soil is completely dry. (She uses the chopstick trick.) She says there was some sudden cold weather. Is this the reason it is flopping over? Should she cut off the damaged stems? What should she do?

Oof! If it was left out in less than 40°, chances are it’s a goner. You might be able to salvage some pieces and repot (and cross fingers and toes). I did that with one of my plants that was left out overnight once and I was able to salvage some pieces and regrow it.

It was inside! But in a windowsill when it got a cold!! It survived all winter just fine, but it suddenly got cold yesterday.

Yeah, ZZ will die in less than 40°. These guys are tough though so try snipping off what appears to be dead (just above the nodes) and hopefully it will bounce back.

Cut off what’s mushy and fell over. Repot in good soil and wait.
