I’m very diligent about treating for pests when I bring home a new houseplant, I spray and quarantine. A few days ago I was checking out my philodendron and saw this on the top of just the new unfurling leaf and on the stem! No damage to the plant, no dark spots, no webs anywhere. Little white things but one looks pretty clear of some type of bugger with six legs? No other plants show infection and I’ve cleaned the whole area where it was. I removed the plant from the population, rinsed, sprayed with Neem and insecticidal soap and wiped thoroughly. Today I don’t see anything but still keeping in quarantine as I’m paranoid as it’s not clear to me what these are. Are these Springtails or White Spider Mites or Masked Hunters or? I submitted to Planta experts but no response yet… any of you know?

Yep i think it’s mealy bugs. Great job catching it early enough that it hasn’t damaged the plant yet! Definitely keep treating it even when you don’t see them anymore, since they’re so tiny at first

So weird since they don’t ‘look’ like the ones I see online but that big one does sort of resemble an adult male and the little ones could be infant crawlers. Gives me the heebie jeebies! This is my first pest encounter (except gnats) of my 110 plants so I suppose I’m doing ok.

Do you use any preventatives to keep pests away long term? Besides the original quarantine and clean?

I add Bonide granules to the soil as well. And look all the time when watering which is how I found these.

I suppose a pest is a pest in most cases and should be treated regardless?

Hi Andrea. If you take a clear picture of the bugs up close with your iPhone you can click on the information symbol at the bottom of the photo and it will often identify the little bugger!
