Can anyone speculate on what is happening with my Chinese lantern… | Pests, diseases and problems | Planta-community

Can anyone speculate on what is happening with my Chinese lantern plant? The bottom leaves keep turning yellow and there are little holes in them. I haven’t caught any bugs red handed but I see sugar ants on the philodendron right next to them so I know SOMETHING is sucking on my plants! 😡 These are south facing, zone 9, just fertilized and alternately sprayed with neem oil and horticulture oil in the last month (with time in between for recovery). Thanks in advance.

I’m no expert on Chinese lantern—never had one. But looks to me like it’s either overwatered, too much sun, or could be pests. It’s great you did neem oil! If it is pests, trimming back the yellow leaves can encourage new growth and limit their attraction to the plant. South facing could be too harsh especially in zone 9.

I’ve never had one either but I bought them at the local extention plant sale and it’s supposed to tolerate super high temps and full sun. It has rained a lot lately but the issue started before that so my best guess is pests. 😡 I’ll just keep treating along with the others and hope it gets under control. I really appreciate your input! Sometimes I feel like no one hears my cries for help!
