Hi!!! Newbie here! I just moved into a new apartment and there are a ton of beautiful plants. However, i have always been more of a cat & dog kinda gal. But our apartment is pet free. So i am taking care of all these lovely plants and really enjoying the process. I have a spider plant that looks in trouble! I would love to hear suggestions. I think its been overwatered & in too dark a space. BUT the soli look infected. It looks like lichen to me, but maybe a pest or mold?

I agree it looks overwatered. Overwatering can promote the growth of fungus as shown. The plants may have root rot based on the look of the centers. The pot looks too big either way too much wet soil suffocating the roots. Water only after the soil dries and not by a schedule. Place in bright indirect light. 🪴🍀 I recommend replacing the soil. Repotting in a smell pot. Cut out the rot, if any. Disinfect the roots with hydrogen peroxide.

I agree with all of this!! I repotted one of my spiders that’s about the same size in a 5’ plastic orchid pot with some perlite, water with a couple squirts of plant food once a week, and placed it in a spot with lots of bright, indirect light, and it’s spat out two spiderettes in the last couple weeks. I put the orchid pot inside of a ceramic pot because the ceramic pot is prettier, but I also think it helps make sure that the roots are getting enough air too. Spider plants love to be at least a little root bound, so I’ve found they do better in a pot that is slightly smaller than you might normally expect.

I agree with your comments. I’m almost obsessed with growing spider plants and they like a tight pot compared to other tropicals. They have very thick roots that hold more water than thin root plants. Soil with excellent drainage is a must. 🪴🍀

So I repotted last night. There were a TON of the small roots off the main roots that were mush and repotted. I replanted in and orchid & standard potting mix w a bit of my compost gold swirled in. I do still need to find a better location though. It was sad right after repotting as expected.

If you don’t want to move it or don’t think you have a good spot for it, do you have any grow lights? I got two for like $18 on Amazon that are decent, have a timer and several light settings. It would probably do best near a window, but a grow light could be helpful in the meantime.
