Does anyone know what this thing is? It’s been eating all of my pepper and tomato plants, and how do I stop them?

That, unfortunately, would be a hornworm my friend. Your best bet would probably be picking them off by hand. If you have chickens, they love them as treats. Preventative measures include tilling the soil so that the larva can’t grow in spring, and planting things like basil near your plant. There’s lots of natural predators of them, though! Paper wasps, ladybugs, and lacewings are great options for the garden! Or, you can make a garden spray consisting of cayenne pepper, water, and soap! It forces hornworms away. You just have to use it regularly. There’s also a lot of chemicals you can turn to if these don’t work

How to attract natural predators for these: make your area friendly to lizards (adding a rock that gets morning sun will encourage them to bask there.) Large predatory wasps show a strong preference for american aster species. For shelter, they like spots that are protected from wind and rain with a ledge they can nest under (so they really like being under decks. Be aware they're defensive if disturbed.) Small braconid wasps like nectar plants in the general carrot family (includes fennel, dill, yarrow, parsley). Braconids parasitize these caterpillars, so keep any caterpillars you see with white tube shaped wasp eggs along their back. Mantises are also effective. You can move a wild one onto the plant to let it know it's good hunting, or buy young ones from insect farms
