What would cause my bird of paradise to have these black damage to its stem? I know my daughter’s puppy chewed it. Could that be why? Also, my gold dust croton is loosing leaves at the bottom.

It could be rot or infection if the area was chewed an had not properly healed. I would separate the two plants. Treat infected roots by cutting away all rot. Rinse the roots to disinfect with hydrogen peroxide. Replace all of the soil. Both plants are tropical and thrive in hot climates with high humidity. Ensure it gets at least 8 hours of full sun or a grow light. Add a humidifier, if needed.
