My purple mum has roots growing out of the drainage holes. Should I trim the roots?

You can trim if you want, or repot. I will just cut the root ball in half and put it back in the same pot if I want the plant to stay the same size.

Can you do this with any plant that you want to keep from growing anymore than it currently is? TIA…🤗💚🪴

Yes, it’ll keep it the same size, very helpful if you don’t have space or really like a pot it’s currently in.

    Thanks, I trimmed it. 👍🏻

My favorite succulent supplier recommended not trimming more than a third as optimal. Anyone who has trimmed half, was it successful and the plant stayed healthy?

It’s really dependent on the plant and when you’re cutting roots. If you do it during the growing season you can remove more. I would probably say the 1/3 rule is a good rule of thumb! Especially for succulents that have slower growing/less vast root systems

Thanks. I’m running out of room for bigger plants in bigger pots!

There are some really great bonsai articles about root pruning, it’s a super common practice in bonsai since they keep the plants in such small pots.

I have lots of hoyas and I’m thankful they grow big in their little pots. I don’t have the space to convert 120+ plants into 6” or 8” pots. Nightmare.
