Noticed white (I’m assuming mould) on top of the soil on my new spider plant and also my Ivy plant, and I noticed some of the spider plant leaves were dead/dying but the ivy plant seems to be coping alright. What am I doing wrong? They’re both in quite dim places as I’m strapped for space, but is it that they’re not getting enough light and aren’t drying out enough? And will I now need to change the soil out?
This has happened to me! And still does on one or two plants. Generally mold isn’t a huge problem on top of soil, but it can indicate poor air flow and not drying out enough. When I get some I just kind of lightly rake the top layer of soil to break it up and mix it. Grow lights in dim areas have worked wonders for me! And I also have been changing out a soil I was using that I noticed was holding on to too much moisture, so have slowly been repotting. The biggest thing to check for is it being waterlogged / root rot. But the mold isn’t actually a problem, could just be an indicator, could be okay.

Looks like the soil is dry it could be salt buildup depending on the fertilizer. I think it’s just calcium deposits from watering. if you look at the sides of the pot and you have a buildup of white stuff it’s that. like rings in a glass of water you leave out

Was going to say something like this. That doesn't look like mold. It looks like salt build up. Do you have hard water? How often are you fertilizing and at what strength? The dead leaves you mention, are they blackened? If so then you are likely over fertilizing.
