My dragon tree seems to be doing okay, but I found the soil on top very mouldy the other day and now I’m concerned that this may have been a sign of root rot. I’m a very new plant owner and not sure how to identify whether this is rot or not. Any recommendations? :(

Mold is lack of air and being too moist. Roots will smell bad. From the picture it might be time to repot one size up but make sure it's drying out between watering.

The roots don't look like rot according to the picture but if you see black and mushy roots then its root rot. Plull the plant out of its pot to check if its root bound (which means more roots than soil) if it is then its time to repot. If not then leave it alone until the spring. If you have alot of mold then i would repot it in some fresh soil.

Roots look fine outside the pot. Pull off the pot to inspect all the roots as suggested above. Fungus (mold) on the soil grows with consistent moisture and organic matter. It’s common since spores can arrive with the potting mix, from other plants, on people/pets and blowing in on the air. Most are not harmful. Use a commercial fungicide to kill if it gets overwhelming. Most potting mix fungus die off on its own when you let the soil dry out more between watering. Increase the airflow around the plants to help dry the soil faster. Change the soil if it keeps returning. 🪴🍀
