I am growing some microgreens but I have just realized that the ground seems a bit fuzzy, I think it might be molding. What should I do? Are the microgreens unedible? Is there anything I can do to remove the mold? I am letting them air out to avoid anymore mold growing since they were covered with lid to maintain humidity.
Hello, good afternoon!! That fuzzy layer on the soil definitely looks like mold, and it’s super common when microgreens are kept covered with high humidity and low airflow. You’re already doing the right thing by airing them out — nice catch! If the mold is just on the soil and hasn’t spread to the stems or leaves, the microgreens might still be edible, but it’s safest to toss them if you see fuzz creeping up the plants themselves. Remove the lid permanently and increase airflow — even a small fan nearby helps. Scrape off the moldy top layer of soil gently. Sprinkle a bit of cinnamon on the surface — it’s a natural antifungal. Water from below if possible to avoid surface moisture buildup. For next time, try using sterile seed-starting mix and avoid overcrowding the seeds. Mold happens to the best of us — literally me every other time I try microgreens 🥲
2件のいいね Thanks! I will try cinnamon right away. So far I had a fan blowing at it and I'm not gonna put the lid back on. And then I had it airing out with some fresh air as well lol. And I used a q tip to try and clean up some of the mold. I think the microgreens are fine and the mold seems to be disappearing...
いいね 1件Great just remember cinnamon and airing mold out will make things look like they’re getting better but if the mold touched ANY stem or leaf it’s best to throw this batch away love. The spores can irritate the lungs and stomach and have you sick and the year just started! We shouldn’t start off sick - But it’s your call, just look inch to inch thoroughly because mold can spread.
