I like to put a rock type dressing over the soil of my indoor plants, that seems to help a good deal. If the gnats can't reach the soil, they can't lay eggs, so after a season or two you'll be rid of them. Also honey + dishsoap + vinegar makes a lovely trap for the live buggers
4 LikesHow much like an inch of rock layer ?
0 LikesYes, even a 1/2 inch layer if it's small gravel or lecha. Just so bugs can't reach the soil from landing
1 LikeKeep in mind, adding this layer will also change how often you need to water because it'll keep the moister from evaporating a little. Think of putting a lid on a pan. Definitely feel the soil down under the top layer every time to check if your plant needs watering
1 Likei saw a video that if the infestation is pretty bad you can do 1 part of 3% hydrogen peroxide and 4 parts water and just spray alllll over i haven’t tried it personally but hope this helps!! :)
3 LikesWhat level of “not expensive” are we talking? I have had awesome success with “death drops” from an online plant shop but won’t name them so I don’t get in trouble with the rules. I double the “rocks” but I use small leca balls - there are some that come in different colors and are adorable. Just need to put at least 1/2 to 3/4 inch deep or they won’t help.

0 LikesThe fungus gnat death drops are $38 and have lasted me 2 going on 3 seasons (2yrs) and I have 50+ house plants. I put the drops in every watering as soon as I see a single gnat. And then intermittently when I have no gnats.
1 LikeI use the fist and almost all of my gnats are gone after one time I sprayed all of my plants I have to do it again but it has been three weeks since I used it and have seen 4 gnats sense but killed them
2 LikesAnd I bottom water my plants
2 LikesThis is very helpful thank you!
1 LikeNot sure if cinnamon will kill but it helps prevent so it’s a cool organic and cheap option for preventative especially if you have other plants on the area.
5 LikesThanks I’ll give it a shot!
1 LikeI recently used Nematodes in the soil and it knocked them all out! It took over a week to see a difference which makes sense since they are going after the eggs, not the parents. Good luck!
