I only water when the soil is fully dry - should I wait even longer in the winter?
0 likesYou may need better draining soil, does that have peat in it? Youll want to remove that rotting piece, or it can rot the others. If the top is still firm, chop it let it callus a day or two, then plant it.

Thank you both so much! I just chopped the pieces and am leaving them to callus ... I am confused bc it was def growing in a succulent and cactus mix from Coast of Maine soil, and I only watered it when fully dry! Sigh
1 likeSometimes when they are heavy on peat, it holds too much moisture. I wasn't familiar with that brand, but it shows sphagnum peat as the first ingredient. So it's best to ammend it with more chunky perlite or pumice or akadama
