Hi all. I'm looking for help. I've noticed my inside plants keep growing mold or powdery mildew on the top layer of the soil. I'm trying to figure out what's causing it. Is it a lack of circulation or overwatering? Should I re-pot all my plants? Looks like the below.

That kind of looks like the mineral buildup my own are sustaining. Do you use tap water? I do too. Apparently you’re supposed to give it a thorough rinse with distilled water periodically. I have yet to do that. I would need GALLONS to do that. If it is mold then you’re probably just watering too frequently and/or the soil is too dense.

Okay I'll try that. I use equal parts potting soil, perlite and orquid bark for my soil so I hope it's not that.

Sounds like a pretty decent mix. It’s probably mineral buildup.

I have this issue too. If it is mould it shouldn’t harm your plants (that’s what I’ve always been told/heard). It’s just unsightly. Mineral deposits aren’t great long term. Try a water conditioner also used for fish aquariums.

Im 99% sure this is root mealies. Only real way to treat is to propagate the plant :/ you can use a systemic with imidacloprid but they can come back if you don’t get them all.

Also wanted to note mineral build up will change colors if you wet it. Root mealies stay white and look like mold/cotton fuzz.

This is the worst news I could have received. They are fuzzy 😢

I just had to repot 30 Hoyas with the same problem - I’m here with you in your pain ☹️

Here’s a photo of what mine looked like. My whole plant was wilting and I couldn’t figure out why until I pulled it out :(
