Struggling with my monsteras and root rot recently, repotted into terracotta, waited 4 days between repotting and watering...noticed some issues with my monstera deliciosa and then noticed leaf discoloring on my Thai constellation. I know I need to stop messing with it but at least with my TC, spent $50 so I really want it to thrive and be healthy 😭 the main roots are still firm and are white but they are covered in this, is it the start of them coming down with root rot or is it just soil?? It doesn't come off super easily but I am able to scrape it off 😭

That looks normal. Root rot will be mushy, soft, stringy, easily pull off and smell. Messing around with them will stress them. Also what’s your potting mix, how do you water, how often do you water, what’s its location to light? I don’t think this is a root issue really

I had cut off the root rot prior to taking this pic! But wanted to double check that these roots were still healthy because I keep having a reoccurring issue of root rot. I know I shouldn't mess with them too much but I'm also glad I have because of how much root root I've found 😭 my mix is 40:40:20 cactus/succulent soil:perlite:orchid bark I even had some "monstera" soil that was coco coir and perlite and stuff but I still mixed in some more perlite because it seemed to retain too much moisture. It's in an east facing window on a plant stand. This is the third time I've repotted (oops). First time I just added fresh soil to a clear pot 1" bigger than the one it came in because it was root bound (crying because I've lost literally so many roots fml), noticed the healthy roots I previously saw when I first repotted were looking rotted so I looked at them and found crazy root rot, then cleaned it up and repotted in a terracotta pot smaller than the clear pot trying to get the roots kind of snug since it lost root volume, then noticed leaf discoloration so I looked and found more root rot which is what this pic was taken after I cleaned it up. I was only watering when the top 1-2" were dry and I also have a water meter. I've both watered right after repotting and waited about 3 days after repotting into the terracotta before watering and then I watered with a fungicide water solution. I get really "handling happy" so I think after this repotting (downsized again but plastic pot because I don't have a smaller terracotta and added fresh soil that wasn't damp but also not completely dry) I'm just gonna let Mother Earth takes it's course if it makes it it makes it and if not then I'll go cry lol...I'm going to wait about 3 days before watering again...my deliciosa still had part of the spongey deathplug some box stores have their plants in so I think that was harboring some of the rot which is why it kept spreading (it was mostly all the roots directly coming out from the middle of the root ball) so even when I previously cleaned off the root rot from that plant and spraying it down with hydrogen peroxide, I wasn't reaching that middle part (this is what I'll be telling myself to feel better). I don't follow planta's watering schedule, I water based on how dry the soil is. I even take my plants outside trying to get the soil to dry out a little quicker between planta's watering schedule but the soil just retains so much water and I have no idea because I feel like it's a pretty chunky mix? This might just be my final attempt in hopes it thrives on negligence because I'm obviously not helping it not feel stressed and I definitely own up to that 😭

It sounds like a lot of watering. Moisture meters aren’t 100% reliable (I prefer the stick method) Also moving the plant in and outdoors will stress it just to try to speed up the soil drying out. A little more patience will be your friend. A thirsty monstera will show you when it’s leaves look sad A mix of 3 parts seramis 3 parts bark 3 parts perlite is a good chunky (tropical mix) for a lot of plants. Have you tried bottom watering? It would limit how much water is taken up To me those roots are fine but for now either keep her in the pot she’s in or one she’s going to be snug in

Yes I'm only bottom watering from now on so it only takes up the water it needs! I have a similar mix right now using 1 part tropical soil 1 part perlite and 1 part orchid soil (so bark, even more perlite, and charcoal) Noted on the moving it indoors and outdoors and stressing it out...I'll stop doing that 🤣 I had a feeling that would stress it out but the east facing window I have is looking out to our back porch so there's a little awning that blocks off some of that eastern sun and sky view for the plants so I try to move them out there to also get better sky and better eastern sun 🙃 but I do have a grow light, I guess I just feel like it doesn't do the same as true sun

You are the only one. My friend just got a pink princess philo and she can’t help but try to help it so I had to go to her house and put it somewhere high that she can’t reach so she leaves it alone 😂

Stop watering! Also They like to be root bound (unless you have more roots to soil ratio). Stick a bamboo skewer in to the bottom of the pot - if it comes out dry, then water it. If it’s damp with soil bits - don’t water.

Idk why I water it so frequently!! I know better!! :( UGH!!! I went on a trip for 11 days and was worried about my plants while gone just to come back home and they were THRIVING with my not being there to fkn mess with them and watering them based on planta's schedule 😂😂😂UGH!! Just need to neglect it. I put this Thai constellation in a 4" terracotta pot so hopefully that helps wick away moisture faster and dry the soil out more evenly and trying to get the roots to be snug. I think im finally grasping the pot size to rootball concept now so hopefully that also helps
