Help! I watered my indoor Thai Constellation and all these tiny roach looking things came up from the soil 😩 I applied systemic granules and grabbed a picture of one. She has never been outside and I use a chunky soil mix. What are these bugs? And how did she acquire them?

Ever a Cockroach nymph / Easton subterranean termite or earwig - Forficula auricularia, ever way strange to see it in an indoor plant, did you do a repot recently

Right? I thought that was strange too. No repot recently. Although, she’s gonna get one now 🤣

Definitely not an earwig, definitely not a termite. Possibly a roach (some species have that weird two segment thorax), but also not a great match for them (the abdomen would normally have many segments that look like horizontal bands.) It's definitely some kind of beetle, but it's an unusual one

The dome shape is making me think beetle too 🤔

looks like an american cockroach nymph. weird that they're in your pot, but not surprising. roach nymphs will often burrow and they like dark, humid spaces, so chunky soil isn't that crazy of a hiding spot.

That was my first thought as well until I read more on the roach vs beetle differences. Either way I was so grossed out that this was in my indoor plant and it has been banished to the outside patio for now 🤢 None of my other plants were affected.

it does look kind of like a beetle, but most beetles don't have those segments in their thoraxes, and i couldn't find a match for a beetle that looked like that. it may just be the lighting causing the confusion.

Hopefully the mysterious critter will find a new home outside of your plant pot or make a nice snack for a little bird. Lol
