Mold in the soil is common and often completely harmless, but if you’re saying the plant’s health has started to be affected, definitely check the soil and roots for root rot. If the roots are rotted (dark and mushy instead of light and firm), cut off any rotted roots as much as you can and soak the roots in a mixture of 1/3 part hydrogen peroxide and 2/3 parts water for 30 minutes, then rinse the roots, gently dry them, and repot it in fresh, dry soil. The other possible factor could be overwatering or poorly draining soil. Avoid brands like Miracle Grow who’s soil stays moist for too long, and allow the soil to dry out between waterings. Planta’s app is more of a suggestion of when to check to see if the soil is dry enough to water, and it will tell you in the ID if your plant’s soil should be kept moist or dry between waterings. If you’re looking for a new soil brand to try, I definitely recommend Espoma’s Organic All-Purpose Soil or Foxfarm’s Ocean Forest All-Purpose Soil. If you’re worried about overwatering again, you can add perlite to the soil when repotting to add extra drainage, and make sure your pot has drainage holes. Hope this helps!
