Remove the mesh!! I can’t stress this enough. Almost every plant I’ve purchased, this year in particular, has had a mesh pod surrounding its original roots. It’s a cheap and easy way for the greenhouses to propagate but they don’t remove them. It’s like potting a pot inside another one. While some roots may be able to poke through many are left to rot because these pods also hold the moisture in the center. So while your outer soil is drying up the root ball and center are staying too moist leading to rotting roots and eventually killing your plants. 🪴✌️

I agree completely!!! And I’ll add one more thing on top of that, if you’re buying a plant that you are familiar with, have grown before, or watched a ton of videos about potting them, from a seller on Etsy and they tell you to leave that little pod on the roots, take it off! If you are brand new to that plant or growing plants in general, and you don’t know how fragile the roots are or what they should look like, then leave it on I guess. But the one plant I went against my better judgment and left it on because it was a newer plant to me, is one I eventually had to dig up and pull that off because it was struggling more than every other plant. Ironically it was a pitcher plant I bought last year. Everyone said the roots are fragile so don’t get near them. I ended up using a skewer to gently take all the soil off just like I do succulents and it did great! It’s a good way to protect the roots in shipping, and I understand if someone is brand new to plants they might break the roots on something fragile, but it has to come off at some point or the plant just can’t thrive!

The roots are absolutely tiny compared to my gaya, I barely had to touch them but yes be gentle lol I’ve even seen a mesh pod inside of a plastic cage type. I swear they don’t want your plants to thrive they just want your money.

I’m so glad you brought this up! I found out the hard way! Wish there would be a warning on the side of the pot!

Sometimes, I think it’s planned obsolescence to quickly kill off the plant to sell more.
