I have a Gardenia. I used the contact Planta support and it has been two weeks with no response. I repotted this, added more drainage and gardenia specific fertilizer and nothing seems to help bring it back. Is this gone? Is there a way to save it? I live in central Florida this Gardenia is on my Lanai.

She might be a goner. You can cut little bits off at a time to try to find live wood if you want to be absolutely sure.

I’m not an expert by any means but that looks dead to me. Sorry!

It looks like your friend’s gardenia plant is in rough shape, but there may still be hope to revive it! Here are some steps to assess and possibly rejuvenate it: 1. Check for Signs of Life • Scratch the bark gently on a few branches with your fingernail. If you see green beneath the bark, that part of the plant is still alive. If it’s brown and dry, that branch is likely dead. • Check for flexibility in the branches. If they bend slightly without snapping, they may still be viable. 2. Prune Dead Branches • Cut back any branches that are dry, brittle, or have no green beneath the bark. Prune until you find healthy green tissue, making clean cuts just above a node or a healthy branch. 3. Assess Watering • Gardenias like consistently moist soil but not waterlogged. Check the moisture level by feeling the soil about 2 inches down. If it is dry, water thoroughly. If the soil is wet, let it dry out slightly before watering again. • Consider switching to a watering schedule that keeps the soil lightly moist without drowning the roots. 4. Improve Conditions • Light: Move the plant to a location where it can receive partial sun to bright indirect light. • Humidity: Gardenias love humidity. If possible, mist the plant lightly, or place a humidity tray nearby to increase moisture in the air. 5. Feed Gently • Avoid fertilizing right away if the plant is stressed, as this can harm it further. Once you see signs of new growth, you can start feeding with a mild, balanced, acidic fertilizer. 6. Monitor for Pests or Disease • Inspect the plant for any signs of pests or disease that could be contributing to its decline. Treat appropriately if any issues are found. By following these steps, the plant might start to show signs of recovery. It will take time and patience to see if the gardenia responds, but cutting away dead parts and optimizing its care can give it a chance to bounce back. Good luck!
