My plants have many flies, is there something I can use to get them away?

You can order sticky traps on Amazon that go in the dirt, they work pretty well. I’d also recommend putting a small cup of half vinegar/half water near them, you’d be surprised how many gnats/flies that traps, and it’s non toxic :)

I use apple cider vinegar! I’m sure there’s a few different kinds that would work too though :)

You have fungus gnats if they are tiny and black. They rely on constantly wet soil and eating plant roots to live. Their larvae live in the soil. Break their lifecycle by killing the larvae in the soil with Mosquito Bits whose main ingredient is a bacteria, BTI, that kills the larvae when you water with a solution of it. Sticky yellow traps and other topical sprays kills the flying adults leaving the eggs, larvae and pupas to evolve in the soil. Apply the mosquito bits solution with every watering. You won’t have any future troubles. Also, let the soil dry out between watering. I have over 140 plants. I don’t have a pest issue even though many plants I buy come with fungus gnats. I have never needed the yellow sticky traps. I isolate new plants and immediately treat with Mosquito Bits. I drown the adults with a soapy water spray made with Dawn dishwashing soap. 🍀🪴

I agree with Sunny. I have had a huge outbreak of fungal gnats and this method works. I didn’t know about the drowning adults with soapy water spray. I use sticky yellow traps for the adults. Do you just spray the entire plant with the soapy spray in order to get all the adults?????

Yes, I spray down every new plant with the soapy water solution of Dawn soap at least once a week for 30 days while they are in quarantine. I can’t wait for them to find the yellow stickies. The other dishwashing soaps may be too harsh. The soap film traps and suffocates the winged gnats. They can’t break the bubbles.

I found some fungus gnat larvae tablets on Amazon, so I just water the soil with this tablet and the issue will be sorted?

I’ve only used Mosquito Bits brand. I can’t vouch for the effectiveness of others, their active ingredients or their instructions. Sorry. You would have to follow their instructions. The instructions for Mosquito Bits and part of the label are in the picture. I got it on Amazon.

That’s great! I’m feel the same way about waiting for the adults to be caught and/or escaping. I will do that for all my new plants in quarantine!!! Are there any picky plants that are sensitive to the dawn soap? How much dawn do you put in the water?
