I got my orchid on clearance because it was in bad shape, I have been growing it hydroponically but I can’t tell if it’s doing well. The roots are a bit soggy and stink but the leaves look okay I think.

when I bought it, it was in soil but they were out of stock in orchid mulch so once I got home I put it in water. (this was about 2-3 months ago)

Okay, I wanted to do the same for my orchid a while ago (make it a water based plant). When I did that I noticed it got soggy and died… the leaves seemed to live for a very long time so it kinda went unnoticed. I think the same thing may have happened here, it was a soil base plant and when you put it in water the roots were unable to adjust and could be starting to rot. What happens is, some plants develop roots for soil and others develop roots for water. So when you transfer the old soil roots into water they can rot, due to not having the ability to retain moisture and nutrients properly. I’ve lost two orchids so far , so maybe I’m not the best person to be getting advice from. If I were you I would cut the roots off (soggy) and let them try again with some fresh water roots.

Hi, Phalaenopsis orchids need a dry period when you’re trying to adjust to hydro. Generally, 4 days wet 3 days dry. It cannot survive submerged. Hope this helps!

If you watch the orchid roots, dry roots will be wrinkly and gray. Watered roots will be green and plump. Just watch the roots and it’ll tell you when it needs water. :)

Most orchids are epiphytes, which means they cling to trees in the wild. That means they would normally have no soil, lots of air, and would get water directly from rain and fog. Your orchid's roots are not doing well because they are pretty much being suffocated. If you still want to do water, then only submerge it for a few (10-20) minutes once a week and afterwards keep the roots dry with only a bit of water in the bottom to keep humidity up. Otherwise, switch to orchid bark. Since it's making a bad smell, it's probably starting to rot, so cut off any dead or seriously sick roots (healthy roots are firm, dead and rotting ones are squishy, dead ones are hollow and will expose a stringy internal root if pulled) and treat with hydrogen peroxide. Also make sure the crown (where the leaves meet) stays dry as it can trap water and cause rotting. I'm including a reference picture for root health; they can tell you a lot about what the orchid needs. Your orchid's leaves look healthy, so it should recover
