I love my little Zz plant. She's placed on the stairway which is low light. I was wondering why the soil looked like this. I noticed it on the snake plant I got from easyplant as well. It's not due to the company because they didn't arrive like this. Just want to know if location of the plant can be causing this. I appreciate your feedback. I am noticing that the soil is super moist on top could that be the cause? I filled the planter and haven't had to touch it sense but I'm wondering if I should only fill it halfway next time instead of the recommended full thing.

That sadly looks like rot.. How often do you water it? Zz and snake plants both like to dry up completely before watering

They arrived to my house on the 29th of March. That is when I put water in it. They are self-watering.

Take that thing outta the self watering pot immediately! Lol what I learned the hard way is they will sell ANY plant in a self watering pot - even if they’re not meant to be in one. Zz’s like to be very dry before getting watered.

Yeaaaa I had a money tree in I think that same branded pot! And it was light pale pale green because I was essentially drowning it. Save those pots for plants like African violets or a fern!!

That one piece is a gonner 🥹 BUT if you take it out like right now, assess the root rot and pick off any dead roots before repotting you may be able to save it!

If you wanted to, you could propagate some of the zz plant. I’ve heard that you can propagate it with just the leaf.

spray the roots you are able to save with hydrogen peroxide, undiluted. you won’t need to rinse it or anything. this will not harm the plant. it will kill any bacteria left from the root rot
