New Plant Mom

Hey Guys New plant mom here. I just got this Dieffenbachia , which I’m so excited about I’ve had her for about a week, and I noticed that three of the leaves are turning yellow . Any thoughts on why?

Does this plant have drainage holes in its pot? And what is your watering schedule for this plant?

Yes I changed it from a nursery pot to a clear pot with drainage. I have only had it a week and just watered it Saturday with liquid fertilizer in the water

I think the problem is watering too much or too little. These water issues can cause leaves to yellow.

I would say its a combo of a bit too much water and repot shock. Seeing as it seems to be lower leaves all on the same-ish level. Keep an eye on it, check thoroughly for pests if you notice a quick increase in this yellowing (and by quick I mean from maybe 2-3 leaves to 5-7 over night, I waited way too long for mine as I assumed it was lack of light/over watering, and have been battling thrips ever since), I’d also wait 1-2 waterings after a repot before I’d start with fertilizer. You want the plants roots to have a chance to get adjusted before it starts taking up nutrients in that way. The fresh nutrients from the new soil you’ve just added will be enough for it at the beginning. Water when its 1/3-1/4 moisture left, meaning its mostly dry. Use a bamboo skewer and check the soil all the way to the bottom. So you have an accurate judgement. Good luck :) I think yours will recover just fine.

Thanks so much !!! Should I cut the yellow off ? I’ve moved it a little further from the window as well

I’d just leave it for the time being due to not wanting to stress my plant out any more at the moment. If it yellows down and easily detaches from the stalk then I would go ahead and remove it.

Which direction is your window facing? Depending, I might leave it closer for the moment until the days get longer. Unless your window is south facing and getting hot/intense sunlight it should be fine being closer. It’s important for leaf burn and those types of things if the sun your plant is receiving is very hot/intense/long durations. This time of year (depending on where you live*) the light is usually okay for most plants to get a bit of direct sunlight on their leaves.

I’m not sure if it’s south facing or not. Here is VA so it’s not scorching hot yet. Still 50/60s with some sunny days I was worried about burning the leaves

I was getting this with mine and I’m still not sure if purely over/under watering. I learned it can also come from lime sensitivity (hard water). Distilled or rain water is best. Even a filtered water is better. Sitting water out didn’t do anything . I also started misting all those who get misted with 2tsp peroxide: 1gal filtered water combo to mimic rainwater.
