Cinnamon anyone? Fungus gnats. We've noticed a bit of an uptick in our fungus gnats lately - I've been trying to let our soil dry out a bit more while we focus on moving, in hopes we can purge the little buggers prior to the move but I'm looking for some extra ammo. I've heard cinnamon is good, but is that okay for all soil plants? Do I sprinkle it before or after watering? Should I put out some essential oils? Any help is appreciated, thank you!!!
I don’t know if it works yet, but i have been sprinkling on after I move my plants inside. The jury is still out…
2 gillningar Have you been having any adverse effects to your plants? Or has it seemed to be working? My only other ideas is to do a soil change RIGHT before we move them and we just did one not too long ago this year
0 gillningar I haven’t seen any adverse effects yet, but I just started it this weekend. I have soaked all of my plants in a diluted castile soap, sprayed an insecticide, and I still have a few gnats. Thats why I have been trying the cinnamon. So far the Castile soap hasn’t had any adverse effects to the plants and has seems to have killed most of the gnats.

I tried cinnamon on a few of my plants. I sprinkled a generous amount to ensure the top of the soil is fully covered. While doing that for one of the plants, I actually saw a gnat shrivel up in contact. I was so surprised. But I did it only to about 3 plants. When you water afterwards, a good amount of the cinnamon remains as it doesn’t mix well with water, but doesn’t keep. I always use mosquito bits tea to water my plants for the larvae in the soil. It takes some time to hit all the cycles so I just do it every time I water.

I’ve never heard of cinnamon for treating gnats I’ve only ever heard of it for antifungal properties. I used some on my colocasias when they had come in with corm rot from the shipping process and it’s been wonderful. I guess I haven’t seen any fungus gnat activity in those 3 plants vs I get them in everything else though so maybe the cinnamon on the roots was the way to go?

cinnamon is an antifungal and can deter pests but i've never heard of people using solely cinnamon to get rid of gnats. it can't be very efficient
