Guys! What on Earth just happened? I was examining my Christmas cactus and the whole thing just popped off. I’ve been watering her on an appropriate schedule. The rest of the plant looks fine. I’m so sad- can these pieces be propagated?

Michigan mommyLooks to me that you might have root rot. Is it in very well draining soil? Christmas cactus are notoriously difficult to save from root rot but it can be done. My recommendation is to repot into something extremely well draining. While repotting, inspect the roots that are left on the part still standing and cut off any that are rot. Then spray well with plant spray if you have the proper ingredients (2 cups water, preferably filtered, 2 tbsp neem oil, 2 tbsp peppermint Castile soap, 1 tbsp rubbing alcohol). If you don’t have that, at least spray or rinse with peroxide. For the sections that have no roots remaining, trim back any squishy sections of the stem and attempt to propagate in water with prop drops or whatever your choice of root stimulation is. Pray you cut off enough to eliminate the rot and wait.

Ms.IssyHow much sunlight are they getting? That color makes me think it might also be very sun stressed. In my experience these plants like partial sun, I keep my near an east window (I live in north east USA) and she likes that spot the best of any I’ve tried.

TristanThat happened to mine in my cross-country move, this is her now. They do rebound! I plant her in cactus/succulent soil. They like well draining soil.
