I got a cutting of a prayer plant and I’ve had it in water for about a month. It rooted and has a new leaf growing. I noticed that the leaves started tucking in. I repotted it today and put a grow light but then I read the tucking in might be because too much light. I had the cutting next to my aerogarden so maybe the light was too bright? I took the grow light off and put it in a south facing window. What do you guys think? Will indirect light help it?

Is that pot full of soil? It looks a bit large for such a young plant. I might size down. I know calatheas like to be moist as well! Still, I’d watch for root rot. (Take my advice with a grain of salt I killed my last calathea 💔)

Ooh good to know! I’m gonna move it to a smaller pot. I just put it in today.

Perfect! I’d also let it settle that new smaller pot for a bit even if it looks a bit sad. Plants can go into a “shock” sort of phase when getting repotted. Only get worried if it’s gets continuously worse 😊💚

They do better in a soil mix that can retain a little bit of moisture, but also includes some aeration. The soil I use is from Oh Happy Plants, she makes phenomenal mixes. I make all my other soil mixes but as soon as I started using these her “Pray for Us” soil they thrived! They like distilled water, can do ok in lower light, but thrive in bright indirect light. Also a bit higher humidity. This plant is in my plant wall and I don’t use a humidifier with it (although it might be even better)

So I agree with everybody else! Downsize that pot (for new prop babies I use a 2” pot) and chunky soil but not too chunky so it holds some moisture! My prayer plant lives in the bathroom (it has partial sun) and LOVES its life! I have 4 active leafs unfurling currently.

I thought I was killing mine… until I looked it up and they do lay flat in the daylight and perk up at night. It’s still in the original pot a bought it in and she’s thriving. Had her for about 3 weeks and she’s gotten about 5 new leaves.

Your light looks too close!! I would definitely move the light away…
