My flaming Katy has started to have soft droopy leaves and the lower leaves near the soil these brown and yellow spots. Many of the leaves on the bottom have fallen off. I followed the watering instructions from this app exactly and the pot has drainage. I’m not sure what happened?

sometimes the app is wrong when it comes to watering schedules. it can’t be 100% perfect, so it’s better to use it as a reminder to water your plants soon rather than an actual schedule. your plant seems like it probably is overwatered

I suspect it has root rot. It should be repotted, and you should remove any soft or mushy roots. Planta tends to have people water way too often, so I just use it as a reminder to check. These plants are succulents and need to dry out fully between waterings. My method for checking is sticking a wooden skewer or chopstick in the pot, leaving it a minute, and if it’s dry and clean I water.

I’m a very new plant mom, what kind of soil should I use? Is there a way to choose a pot size or is it just whatever it fits on?

Unless the soil is super wet and soggy it can be reused for now. For succulents, I use succulent and cactus soil with perlite and orchid bark added for drainage. Since you’re new to plants, I assume you don’t have those on hand, so I would recommend any cactus soil that isn’t miracle gro. For pot size, I go a little bigger than the root ball. Unless the root system is very large and there are more roots than soil, it can stay in the same pot.

What is your mix ratio for this concoction?

I do about equal amounts for both, slightly more bark and perlite for succulents and cacti and slightly more soil for most tropical plants

Where in the pot do you put it? At the edge, in the middle of the stems, etc.? By a minute you time it for 60 seconds?

This has always happened to any of the varieties I’ve gotten. I take them out but then it seems they just pass away within months.

Same, but I’ve always kept them in the same soil and container that they come in. I’m hoping I’ll have better luck after repotting and checking the roots!
