Help me save my string of turtles please! It's been slowly dying over the last six months and I think it's barely clinging to life. I water it on schedule with Planta. Should I repot? I've seen these inside glass jars - should I try that? I'm at a loss.

i think i would take cuttings of it and propagate off those while you wait for further remedy advice on your mother plant

Watering string of plants is like playing Russian roulette, but if you’re doing it according to planta it’s definitely dying of root rot from overwatering

I’m pretty new to Planta and gardening. Do you find that the app recommends watering too often?

Hi! Yeahhh, most the time unfortunately, it’s a helicopter parent of an app lol, I use the watering notifications as mere suggestions to check the soil or look at the leaves to see if they are curling or not as stiff. I usually have to snooze the notification a few times before the plant actually needs it

Agreed! The app lets me know when to check if they need water - but I snooze half of the time.

String of turtles is a peperomia and should be watered as such (most peperomia are epiphytic (grow on other plants)). So, they have shallow, thicker roots to help them cling on to other plants. So, shallow pots are good, and chunky mixes of 3 parts orchid bark, 1.5 parts long fibered sphagnum, 1 part pumice, 1 part coco coir. They should be happy with that. The mix you have looks like a lot of peat moss which is super good at absorbing a lot of water... Until it dries and it becomes hydrophobic and nearly impossible to wet again.

Thank you for this I will try and move them into another mix!

Let me know how it goes! Best of wishes to your string of turtles, hopefully it will recover quickly.
