I got an H.F. Young Clematis a few months ago and it has been a constant battle to keep it alive. I pruned it and it seemed to be thriving but I came home one day to a stem torn out of the soil. Another day, I came home to find one that appeared cut off, and then another day I came back to find another cut in the middle but still hanging onto one of the other twining branches. It should have had 5 new stems with flowers growing but now I'm left with two. I moved it to the back where the sunlight isn't as intense and is more accessible to rain (we haven't had rain the last several days though-i've just watered them) because I believed it was being burnt by the sun as well as the marigolds I'd planted around it at the base. Now, I've discovered that all of the marigolds are dying off and I'm not sure why or how to fix it. Sorry for the darker images, I work nights and just noticed how they're doing. Edited to add that the plastic forks were inserted due to fear of squirrels vandalizing plants.

Sounds like squirrels are damaging the plants. They could be looking for food they buried or digging for grubs/worms. I had lots of squirrels digging in my pots last year because of a strong tropical storm and a hurricane wiped out all the acorns early in spring. It’s hard to stop them from digging. Try growing Society Garlic as a deterrent. It’s a perennial that grows in zones 7-10. I grew it in my potted plants for years. Comes back each spring. It smells like garlic from the leaves to the roots. It’s a repellent to pets, deer, and hopefully squirrels. Brushing against it is like brushing against mint. The scent lingers in the air. The marigolds look like they got too dry. 🪴🍀

Thanks Sunny. I hope I can salvage some of the marigolds and I'll have to prepare that garlic for next year. It's definitely been a war zone with these squirrels involving other plants but I was hoping this wasn't from them. I've tried cayenne pepper, ground cinnamon, lavender plants, rosemary plants, and even realistic-looking fake snakes. The forks have been helping though. I'll include the society garlic as a bonus.
