Not sure what is going on with this plant. I've managed to keep it alive from a rescue rack for a year but it doesn't thrive and I am constantly cutting off leaves when they dry out and turn black. Picture this and LeafSnap both tell me it's a fern. Planta told me it was a croton. Lol. It's in a north facing window in a bathroom. I water it when the top turns dry and it doesn't sit in water. Any thoughts?

Try letting it dry out fully then water it

it’s definitely a fern, and a finicky one

I own only 2 fern. I love them. But, I drown them trying to maintain an evenly moist soil.

I am not a fern fan. I always kill them. But it was on the clearance rack for $.99 so what was I to do? Lol

It’s a fern, Twisted Leaf. It could be in a too large pot and can’t use up the water leading to overwatering based on the yellowing and spots. This internet photo shows a similar size fern in a tiny pot. I recommend checking the roots for rot, if you haven’t already. I would see if it has filled out the pot or if it looks like too much wet soil is constantly around the roots. Check if the soil is too dense and slowing drainage or not allowing enough oxygen. It may need some perlite or bark/coco chunks.

It could also be getting too much light and be drying out due to that
