Need help with my Birds of paradise plant and my painters palette… | Pests, diseases and problems | Planta-community

Need help with my Birds of paradise plant and my painters palette plant. I brought them inside for the winter a couple months ago and they both started turning yellow and drying up on some leaves at the same time. I also have a yucca palm that doing the same thing. What could be the cause of this? Maybe they are getting use to the new environment? Cold draft? Underwatering?

Insufficient light, low humidity and temperature issues could be contributing if all the plants are acting the same. Try to emulate the lighting conditions they had outside by window placement and adding grow lights. Reduce water if they are growing slower indoors to prevent over watering. 🍀🪴

Agreed, and it could also be the oldest leaves just dying off to accommodate for the stress of the transition, which fortunately isn’t a super huge deal. I bet they’ll perk right back up with a little more light and humidity!

Thank you for replying. I have them in a south facing window. I thought maybe they weren't getting enough sunlight so I bought a grow light a week ago and I give them 4 hours of yellow violet red and 4 hours of violet red. I'm thinking about sealing off my windows with plastic to prevent any drafts. Here is a picture of all my plants. Not all of them are drying up but I know the plants I have at the top are easier to care for. I'm a newbie to caring for plants. I have had most of these plants about a year and last winter they started doing the same thing but once spring came and I brought the tropical plants outside, they came back to life again. I just don't want to lose any of them, winter has just begun and that's a long wait til I can bring them outside again in the spring. You can also kind of see my palm in the upper left is doing the same thing.

if the plants are otherwise healthy looking, I personally wouldn’t stress too much about one of the older leaves turning yellow and dying off; that can be really normal sometimes as the plants adjust to a big change or redirect energy to new growth!

I have a humidifier. Should I use that?

I would probably say yes; winter is so dry and those plants love humidity. All of my plants get humidifiers in the winter and it really seems to help.

I just saw your configuration. The hanging plants are getting more light. Several are within a foot of the grow light. That helps them a lot. The plants on the floor are too far from the light and too far below the window. Plus, the bird of paradise likes a lot of light and can take direct sunlight. I recommend adding more lights and/or elevating the plants to put their pots at the windowsill level. The light meter app (in Planta or online) or a purchased light meter can show the amount of light each plant gets. I don’t change colors on my grow lights. It gets too complicated. I just use full spectrum lights that shine white. My plants are happy.
