I recently acquired this really old succulent from a family who were moving house and didn’t want it anymore. The pot was way too small so yesterday I repotted it into terracotta which was the right size. I watered it and left it in our poly tunnel overnight, and when I came back today to bring it inside I noticed loads of little white bugs running all over it. Spider mites? I just completed doused it in soap spray in the hope that that will start killing them off, but does anyone have any ideas on better ways to get rid of these? Thank you! x

Hard to say what it was without before pics, but jade is resilient — a strong-willed plant, if you will lol Seems like you’re on the right track — just keep watching for a reappearance

I received a jade plant in the mail covered in earwigs, so I can tell you what I did with that, as well as a general way of treating jades for just about any pest. They’re pretty resilient, so only mealybugs and fungus gnats tend to try to go for them. You can put isopropyl alcohol on a q-tip and gently work your way through wiping all the white off the leaves. As for anything that might’ve entered the soil, mosquito bits dunked into the water during a watering is good, but i treated the earwig issue like I would with something like a gnat at risk of larvae and eggs in the soil. If you don’t have mosquito bits, or know where to find them just yet, you can take the plant out of the pot (with the soil, or reduce it completely to its roots if you see bugs or larvae in the soil, and repot with completely new, dry soil) and soak the soil or roots in a mixture of 1 part hydrogen peroxide and 2 parts water for about 30 minutes, then rinse the roots or soil off with water, gently dry it off with a paper towel, and place it back in the pot. For any infestations in the soil I take a more aggressive approach to avoid future issues or spread to other plants and just repot completely, treating the roots with peroxide. The jade that arrived in the mail was extremely rootbound and couldn’t be seperated from the soil, but once I did the peroxide soak once and bottom watered it every 10 days I haven’t had an issue with it since. It perked back up within 3 days after the soak. Hope this helps!
