Hi all, I bought this plant and the tag said “mini bonsai” I bought specific bonsai rock soil and put in a well drained pot as requested for bonsai plants. It’s literally been dropping leaves constantly or browning edges. I tried to read up on what I need to do for it but no matter what I try, it keeps getting worse. It’s in a well lit area, no direct sunlight that could cause burning. The only thing I can think of is that I’m somehow messing up the watering schedule? Can anyone help? TIA

I believe that is a ficus triangularis variegata. I don’t know a huge amount about them/ficus in general. But I have heard they don’t love being messed with (repotted, moved, etc) and I’m not sure that bonsai rock soil is their preferred substrate. Hopefully someone who knows more can chime in.

I think someone switched the tag. This isn’t mini or a bonsai. I don’t know much about ficus, but I don’t think they do well in rocky medium.

I was bamboozled ! Thank you. I’ll definitely be changing the soil. All the plants had the same tag unfortunately

Switch that baby into a well draining chunky soil mix, find a window it seems happy living in and water when the top inch ish is dry and your plant will bounce back. Maybe it’s also tap sensitive so could be your water isn’t good for it.

Ficus do not like their roots randomly touched. If you removed the old soil to put it in bonsai soil, I assume you did a thorough removal, which can be very stressful for ficus. I would put it outside in the shade and see if the natural warmth outside will help it reestablish but it’s in shock and it will drop leaves until it feels like it has enough roots to make new energy for the plant to feed the leaves. :( sorry

To further explain, when ficus grow roots, they grow downwards yes but they mostly grow horizontal because that’s how it can stabilize itself in the wind (in the wild.) it essentially anchors itself in all directions while it grows and builds a “foundation” of sorts. When we repot and remove everything, we disturb the foundation it built, it has to rebuild until it can sustain leaf growth again. The foundation has to be strong before you can have windows.

Thank you for the info. It actually came as two separate minis that had soil mix. Which I already thought was weird that (according to the tag) was asking for the rocky mix. I didn’t disturb the soil in the 2 inch pot. I just put all the bonsai rock mix around it. Hopefully it can bounce back in the right soil. Thank you again

In that case, it may just be acclimating. Keep an eye on the leaf structure - if it starts feeling thin, consider upping your watering. They can be harder to keep watered in bonsai soil but they like to drink a lot and then be dry for a bit but not too long. Soilless mixes are great for bonsai but they don’t retain water very well. I find it easier to use outside where you can water every day and it dries in that day. It’s not impossible to grow ficus in it though because ficus can essentially be grown in water if you wanted. You can get some mycorrhizae fungi rooting powder to help it along if you notice it struggling.
