Any idea what’s happening to my dwarf banana plant? Planta diagnosis says it’s due to over watering but I only water it once a week. Any help will be greatly appreciated! 🍌

Once a week could be too much! Is the soil dry before you water it again? It’s small enough that you should be able to pull it out of that pot and check the roots - I recommend doing that ASAP

Thank you! I changed my care plan a bit to hopefully get this baby back up and happy!

Looks overwatered. Banana plants growing in the ground in full sun requires a lot of water to quickly grow and produce fruit. Banana plants growing in pots require less water. They still like full sun all day which helps use up water in the potting soil. I recommend removing the decorative stones from the top of the soil. They slow evaporation leaving moisture too long in the soil. This leads to root rot. Water only when the soil is almost completely dry. Check the moisture level with a wooden skewer left in the soil 15 minutes or more to show the moisture level. Good luck!🍀🪴🍌

Was also going to recommend removing the stones, too much moisture retention

Did what you suggested! I have a moisture meter in the soil now! Thank you for the suggestions!

From my experience, dwarf cavendishes love two things LOTS of sun and LOTS of water. So.. this could be either of two things: 1. When the season changes to winter and light levels go down with shorter days it naturally kills off its leaves to preserve its energy reserves. The leaves grow back in full in the summer. But seeing as it’s spring / summer in the northern hemisphere, if you’re getting this now, the crunchy brown leaves actually suggests the second point 2. Lack of water. Bananas love water and if it’s facing a full sun window as it should for best growth, then you’ll also be getting a lot more growth - water being used up quicker - and solar gain / window heat all of which means the soil dries a lot faster, so you might find yourself needing to water it more frequently than once a week. But - of course - always feel the soil first with a finger or chopstick before watering.
