Hi plantie loves! My silver inch plant grows like a weed BUT the leaves near the top all dry up making her look really stringy while the leaves at the end are thriving. Do you have any ideas on why this is happening or tips on how to stop this?

Tradescantia are crawling plants so naturally the beginning part of the plant isn't as important to them as the ends. You can probably curl and pin the bare roots back into the pots to encourage more growth but i personally like to do hard pruning throughout the year. You can take cuttings and stick them back into the mother pot and they should eventually root without any problems!

0 Mi piaceIt’s typically too little water or too little light if the leaves turn color, dry out and fall off. It’s too much water, too big of a pot or slow drying soil if leaves get mushy/spotty before dropping. I recommend checking the roots for rot, an indication of excessive water. Clean the rot and change the soil. Reduce the pot size if that’s the issue. Cut off the viable end sections. Root in soil or water. Place in a smaller pot since the cuttings are small.
1 mi piaceThis is also super helpful!! I have noticed some leaf spotting so I think I'll try repotting to a smaller pot! Thank you so much!!
1 mi piaceDefinitely, check for root rot. The rot had to be removed and the roots sterilized with hydrogen peroxide to prevent bacterial growth caused by the rot. Disinfect the tools and hands to prevent infection from spreading.
1 mi piaceThe slag/derogatory name for these plants is Wandering Jew. This is because of the way they crawl/wander. They relocate; it is their natural growth pattern. I like to relocate mine back into its pot. I chop & plunk them right back into the soil, I’ve found this is actually easier than propagating them in water first (I use a chopstick to make a little hole so I don’t break the stem). My most recent pruning was rather funny, as I had its length suspended along my wall & one day I realized it had fully detached itself from the pot. 😄 (Side note: as a Jewish woman, this plant does make me reflect on my own moving habits 😅)
