Hey guys, I am new to begonias and have had this beauty since March. I noticed whenever she pushes out a new leaf and old one will begin to deteriorate and make holes through the leaf. I have lost 3 leaves already but gained three new ones. Is this normal? I thought begonias grew up to be more full like trees. Is there something I should be doing? I checked for pest but I didn’t find any so I still cleaned the roots with neem oil.
If your plants are losing leaves anytime they’re developing new ones there’s one of a few possibilities. 1. The roots can’t support more leaves but can support bigger healthier leaves 2. The nutrient level isn’t enough to make new leaves and keep the old ones so it recycles old ones 3. The plant borrows moisture from those older leaves while pushing new ones because the soil isn’t staying as moist as it needs and that just causes the leaf to deteriorate from there. My biggest recommendation would be see if it needs some extra fertilizer, especially look into a specific mix for begonias as they’re not quite the same wants and needs as most similar plants.

1 like I have more begonias than anything else in my collection. I use a straight up 10-10-10 for everything because it’s the most basic blend of fertilizer and I’m already overstimulated when I have to make regular watering trays, orchid fertilizer watering trays, and 10-10-10 fertilizer trays on my main day. My Reiger begonia (the flowery green one) is so sensitive to change that simply touching the pot will cause it to lose a flower within 30 seconds. My begonias are all still young and have their original damaged leaves from the stores/shipping and my bippinitafida doesn’t even have leaves due to shipping stress. The main thing is consistency with watering, humidity, and getting at least a basic 10-10-10 mix to keep them growing decently.

I agree with what has been said, by begonias are so dramatic and drop leaves just because they aren’t watered precisely on time. So don’t worry!
