I impulsively bought a mini phalaenopsis orchid today (so cute), but when i got home i realized there was mold covering the top of the roots ._. Does anyone have any advice on getting rid of the mold? also what would be the cause(s) so i can avoid this in the future?

I know that overwatering is a big cause of mold, and my mom used to just tell me to scoop the mold off of the plant and sprinkle it with cinnamon. You should probably research it some more, but that's what she's always told me and it's seemed to work lol

Honestly don't know if it ACTUALLY works, but that's what I've always done and my plants end up surviving every time. Beautiful plant btw!

I have a mold allergy and one of my best plant fertilizers causes mold to grow on the surface of the soil. It’s a sign of healthy soil but you want the mold in the soil, not on top. I use a solution of one part HP and four parts water and I spray that on the surface of the soil or anywhere I see mold. It takes it down and then I work it into the soil so it’s not on the surface. This mold is harmless to your plants. It just doesn’t look good and can be a problem for people like me who are sensitive to mold.

You should actually repot that orchid. It looks like they’ve planted it in something I call a death ball. They do this with plants that bloom out and people usually throw away. Put it in some orchid bark in an orchid pot and you can keep it after it blooms and it will rebloom next year. HINT: Never use ice cubes to water any plant. They don’t like it any more than we like jumping in a tub full of ice water. Instead, run tepid water through it once a week and shake all the water out.

I second the repot suggestion. A good chunky mix of orchid bark, perlite and charcoal! Best indicator for watering orchids is when the roots are green don’t water. When the roots are gray it needs water. Warm or room temp water works best!

You should sterilize the roots with hydrogen peroxide with a spray bottle, then repot it. They can also grow in water if you prefer that
