hey!! this is my friends plant that i help her care for, we need help!! we don’t know if it’s too cold and not humid enough or it’s been over/underwatered! i have a feeling she got root rot at one point and then began to heal from it, but we’re stuck! she doesn’t put out new growth and keeps losing leaves.. any advice is welcome

That pot looks really big for her. I’d repot in a much smaller pot - like maybe a 6” pot? Whatever size where the root ball fits and has like 1/2”-1” circumference to grow out. When the pots too big it make it hard for the soil to dry out and the roots prone to rotting

that’s the problem we were having before, she was in a much smaller pot but she kept toppling over from her top heaviness. should we add a trellis in a smaller pot maybe?

Maybe do a deeper pot that’s smaller? You could try a trellis if it helps balance out the weight. I don’t believe that plant will use the trellis so it’d just be decorative.

Or maybe if you can get a decorative ceramic pot that’s heavier to put the smaller pot with draining holes in?

i don’t think this plant will climb, but in a smaller i would say 7 inch pot her leaves were like splaying outwards a falling to the side

Hmm. I would think that if the leaves were splaying out like that it would be more an issue with its conditions (watering schedule, sun exposure, etc- especially if you were thinking root rot before- overwatering can make them sag/droop like that) rather than the size of the pot. I think the best bet would be down sizing the pot, only watering when the first couple inches of soil are dry, and making sure it’s getting the right amount of light. If it’s too top heavy- adding a decorative heavy ceramic pot to but it in. They like humidity too so maybe adding a humidifier? Or spraying more often and/or being near other humidity loving plants. But those are just my thoughts!

When I have a plant that is top heavy but needs a small pot, I put rocks at the bottom of the pot before adding dirt, then I pot like normal. The rocks add weight to keep the plant upright and since they’re at the bottom, they won’t compact the soil (always in pot with drainage holes though so water isn’t pooling in the bottom of the pot).

But from the looks of this plant, I’d suspect humidity or watering is the primary issue. Does your friend use tap water when she waters? Is there a humidifier near it?

It also could be dormant!! Mine has barely pushed out leaves over the winter

I agree, mine has literally stayed the same for about 3 months possibly 4 and finally noticed a new leaf this morning! Spring is here!
