I saw somewhere you can boil the potting soil and it sanitizes it for a new plant, is this true?

You are referring to a method called soil sterilization, which is used to kill pests, diseases, and weed seeds in potting soil. While boiling is one way to sterilize soil, it's not the most common or practical method. Here are some ways to sterilize potting soil and the effectiveness of each: ### 1. **Boiling Water Method:** - **Effectiveness:** Boiling water can be used to sterilize small amounts of soil. Pour boiling water over the soil in a container and let it drain out. This can kill many pathogens and pests but might not be as thorough as other methods. - **Limitations:** It's not practical for large quantities of soil and can be messy. ### 2. **Oven Sterilization:** - **How to Do It:** Place moist soil in an oven-safe container and cover it with aluminum foil. Heat the oven to 180-200°F (82-93°C) and bake the soil for about 30 minutes. Use a meat thermometer to ensure the internal temperature of the soil reaches at least 160°F (71°C) for 30 minutes to kill pathogens. - **Effectiveness:** This method is effective for killing bacteria, fungi, and insects in the soil. - **Ventilation:** Be sure to ventilate the area, as heating soil can produce an odor. ### 3. **Microwave Sterilization:** - **How to Do It:** Place moist soil in a microwave-safe container, cover with a lid (with a small vent), and microwave on high for about 90 seconds per kilogram (2.2 pounds) of soil. Ensure the internal temperature reaches at least 160°F (71°C). - **Effectiveness:** This method is quick and effective for small amounts of soil. - **Precautions:** Allow the soil to cool completely before using it. ### 4. **Solarization:** - **How to Do It:** Spread the soil on a clear plastic sheet in a sunny location, then cover it with another clear plastic sheet. Leave it in direct sunlight for 4-6 weeks. The heat from the sun will sterilize the soil. - **Effectiveness:** This method works well for large amounts of soil and is effective against weeds, fungi, and some pests. - **Time:** It's a slow process and works best in hot climates. ### Recommendations: - **Oven or Microwave:** For most home gardeners, the oven or microwave method is the most practical and effective way to sterilize small amounts of potting soil. - **Post-Sterilization:** After sterilizing soil, let it cool and store it in a clean, sterile container to prevent recontamination. ### Caution: - **Nutrient Depletion:** Sterilizing soil can kill both harmful and beneficial microorganisms. Consider adding a balanced fertilizer or compost after sterilization to replenish nutrients. - **Safety:** Always exercise caution when handling hot soil to avoid burns. You can choose the method that works best for your situation. While boiling water can work for small batches, the oven and microwave methods are generally more efficient and effective for thoroughly sterilizing potting soil.

I saw a YouTuber once say you could add a 50:50 mix of peroxide and water to old soil, let it dry completely then mix in with new soil and use. Has anyone ever tried this?

Hydrogen peroxide and water 50:50 is the way to go, don’t use as a regular but rather for when needed. Wash roots and brush with a sprits spray, Spray on till wet , don’t drown them in the mix. And simply massage wash as you go.
