Calathea problems. I haven’t changed anything about their care process. They were beautiful plants. Recently I did remove their decorative pots cause I noticed alot of moisture on the outside of their black pots and wanted to make sure the plants are drying out as they should. I’ve noticed the soil has been staying more damp for longer than usual. I just trimmed all the dead leaves off both of them. One of them decided to start throwing out new leaves. The other just keeps getting more brown. This is just a phase right. lol. I know they’re temperamental lol

Honestly, Calathea tend to do this if they are not getting their “Goldilocks surroundings of perfect conditions”. If the soil dried too much or lack of humidity and they get crispy and leaves die. Temperamental, is an understatement. When this happens I cut back the leaves (no more than 30% max). Spoil them, but not too much and they bounce back. This summer I put at least 3 outside as I thought they were gone for good. They all have sprung back and will be hauled in soon. Good luck. This species is beautiful when 100% but I often ask if they are worth the fuss. I have 233 other plants to care for. Calathea might be better suited for other plant parents. But until they die I will care for them or adopt them out, eventually.

I’m really bad at keeping all my plants in the same spot lol. I’ll wake up and look at a plant and think it needs more light or more humidity so I’ll set them up in the laundry room / sun room / high humidity room. My bird of paradise loves it in there. My cal palm takes vacations there lol. My calatheas haven’t been the same since I took them outside a few weeks ago for fresh air and real sunlight. They were in the sun too that day cause I remember both of them had closed their leaves. And I’ve been trying to fix them ever since.

I thought I killed mine and I put it in the bathroom near my window that gets good light and it loves it in there I’ve got all new leaves coming in been about 2 months since I moved it didn’t change the pot or the dirt.

You said soil has been staying wet longer, well you better check root health then. They usually can handle bright light and mine actually dry out before I water. If the plant is looking really bad, cut it down to the soil. It will grow back. Of course the usual for caltheas is distilled water (not bottled spring water) and high humidity. I’m in process of moving some of my calatheas into leca.

See that’s why I had them in my sun room lol. Lots of indirect light. Very bright. I have a humidifier in there too cause my bird of paradise loves it in there.

Well here’s an update: I did a root check and the roots are fine. I essentially repotted them, and what I mean is I loosened up all the soil and massaged the roots loose as both plants soils were feeling a bit compacted. When I removed them from their black pots, not a speck of dirt fell. It was like a dirt shell. Outside was “crispy” feeling and inside was soft. I thought the soil would be more wet than it was judging by the top layer. But it was not. I put the same soil back in each pot. It’s just more fluffed up now lol I’m wondering if the dirt cacoon was causing less oxygen to get through. We shall see. Now that I e disturbed them, I’m sure they’ll give me all the attitude lol

Now that their soil has been reworked. I didn’t add anything to them, they got back exactly what they had. Should I let the oxygen work through the soil first and water them in the morning. Or shouldn’t water them today. Currently the soil has the consistency of fresh soil from the bag. Like you can feel moisture in it. But that’s it
